. and Age

±{ you had been a baseball fan in the 1930s, you might have seen Hub Kittle pitch in the minor leagues. There is also a possibility that your grandson could have seen him pitch in the 1980s. That's right, Hub Kittle is the only man alive to have pitched in professional baseball games across six decades.

Kittle began his career way back in 1936 with the Chicago Cubs. He pitched in the minor leagues during the thirties and forties, but he finally decided that he had had enough during the fifties. His love for baseball kept him in the game, though; he became one of the finest pitching coaches in professional baseball.

In 1969, while coaching for the Savannah, Georgia, team, a shortage of pitchers forced him into a game. And in 1973, while serving as pitching coach for the Houston Astros, Manager Leo Durocher called upon Kittle to protect a one-run lead in an exhibition game against the Detroit Tigers. Hub pitched a scoreless inning and got the save.

His chance to take the mound came again in the 1980s. At the young age of sixty-three, while serving as pitching coach for the Springfield Redbirds, Hub Kittle pitched one inning. At that point he became the only player in the history of the American pastime to play in baseball games that spanned over six decades. Hub Kittle has definitely proven the old saying, "You are as old as you think you are."

Action Steps

1. Today I will use my age as an asset rather than an excuse.

2. Today I will

It is not by the gray of the hair that one knows the age of the heart.
